MYTHICAL CREATURES STITCHING AND PAINTING WITH PHILIPPA KING AND MELISSA WHITE – 17th, and 18th FEBRUARY 2025

£280.00

Spending two days interpreting Melissa White’s Mythical Creatures design in paint and stitch last year was such a delight we wondered how we could make it even better. The answer is to offer and optional additional day, away from our classroom and into Melissa’s studio and one of the best regional contemporary galleries, both in Hastings.

DAY 1 - 17th February – Led by Philippa, stitching and painting into a templated artwork on linen designed by Melissa for Kit Kemp’s collection and inspired by Elizabethan stitched samplers. You can choose whether to paint, stitch or do a combination to create a mixed media artwork ready for framing. The picture works beautifully using very basic stitching Philippa will teach you, but if you are more experienced you can put your stitching skills to good use.

DAY 2 - 18th February - Melissa will teach decorative painting techniques, including the secrets of aging and distressing that will help you create a stunning frame. We start with playful experimentation on paper before committing our designs to the frames. These are specially made for us by our local framers and are of the best quality.

We will be completely immersed in Melissa’s work as the wallpaper in our ‘classroom’ at The Bell was exclusively designed by Melissa. She also designs for the likes of Andrew Martin, Lewis & Wood and Zoffany and we are honoured to collaborate with her.

Philippa and Melissa will be with you on both days, and you will go home with a beautiful artwork that at once has feel of the ‘patination of time’ about it.

The course starts at 10am and finishes at 3.30pm on both days. No previous experience required.

DAY 3 - 19th February - This is a delightful optional day to tag onto two hands-on creative days. An exclusive opportunity to visit Melissa in her delightful studio in Hastings. A truly inspiring space, with so much to take in of Melissa's work past and present. Chat about the design process, collaborations and technique over coffee and cake. We'll then make our way to Hastings Contemporary Art Gallery to view their exhibition Immortal Apples, Eternal Eggs. This show features over 50 artworks, created by more than 50 artists over the past 100 years, including Phyllida Barlow, Louise Bourgeois, Sir Anthony Caro, Patrick Caulfield, Michael Craig-Martin, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Sarah Lucas, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. To book this day please see the next tab on the courses. Lunch will be at our own expense in the gallery cafe over looking the fisherman's huts and out to sea. The cost will be £50.00 per person.

PLEASE BOOK FOR THIS DAY ON THE NEXT PAGE.

For a very special experience, stay at The Bell in Ticehurst. We have an exclusive rate for this retreat, 3 nights for £375 including a slap up breakfast. This is based on two people sharing, so bring a friend or a partner as there are plenty of great things to do locally – a perfect staycation to explore the delights of the Kent/Sussex countryside or our favourite arty places locally. Accommodation is subject to availability so please BOOK DIRECT with The Bell - by calling 01580 200300 or booking on their website. There is a small reduction for single occupancy.
